Romain Dupree arrives to Montreal from France only to be informed that his son is dead. However, the deceased is not his son, but an individual who was using his passport. Dupree begins a frantic search for his son, who happens to be wanted by the local mob.

An investigation spanning several years that links dramatic events that took place at the address “2 ancienne route de Lyon” on the outskirts of Grenoble. The narrator/character digresses on the neighborhood’s working-class past linked to the cement industry, and on her childhood memories, whether real or imagined.

One evening, Etienne, a police officer from the BAC, and Christian, his teammate, witness the assault of a young girl. But the killer manages to escape, seriously injuring Christian. Shortly after, Etienne discovers, on the one hand, that Angèle, the woman who left him seven months earlier, is about to give birth and that his new boss, Alex Le Guen, is none other than the man he spent the night with after a drunken evening.

Simon, Mana and Eloka are sitting at the atelier’s table drinking scotch in silence. As one of them evokes his experience of the smoky taste in a boggy forest, Simon says that only rats would survive the end of the world. He finds it sad and beautiful.

In his will, the late Jérôme Armandy has expressed the wish to have all the surviving members of his family summoned to the Château de l'Etang, in Provence. Firmin, Jérôme's servant, asks Claude, a Montmartre artist, to organize the reunion, to find the sum of 17 million francs which is hidden there (as a child he had been told by Armandy where the hiding place was) and to divide the amount between the different heirs. But a series of odd facts occur: Claude is knocked unconscious as he is busy opening the hiding place door; one of the heirs gets killed; and even more astounding, the dead man reappears and... asks his money back!
